Osun State Government Demands International Diplomatic Sanctions Over Pre Election Political Violence

The Osun State Government has formally urged the British Government and international partners to impose immediate economic sanctions and visa bans on several opposition political figures accused of sponsoring electoral violence. Speaking at the Government House in Osogbo during a diplomatic consultation with a British delegation led by Senior Political Advisor Wale Adebajo, Governor Ademola Adeleke detailed how suspected political thugs have launched armed attacks on members of the Accord party, resulting in five deaths and fifteen critical injuries since the start of the 2026 gubernatorial campaign.

Unchecked political violence, thuggery, and targeted killings during election cycles weaken democratic institutions, endanger civilian lives, and discourage domestic and foreign direct investment. Requesting targeted visa restrictions and financial sanctions on political sponsors provides an international deterrent, while directing law enforcement to arrest any violent suspect, regardless of political affiliation, ensures a safe and secure environment for voters ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship poll.

This diplomatic engagement highlights a strategic use of international relations to protect subnational security and uphold democratic processes. By partnering with international monitoring teams to track and expose electoral misconduct, the state government strengthens its security architecture, deters political thuggery, and sets a standard for peaceful electoral administration in Nigeria.
