Plateau State Government Commissions Potato Value Chain Facility to Drive Agrarian Processing

The Plateau State Government has commissioned the primary phase of the Potato Value Chain Support Project in Mangu Local Government Area. Formally launched by Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the multi-million naira agricultural investment delivers a state-of-the-art tissue culture laboratory, a dedicated farmer training center, and a specialized potato processing facility, which was executed alongside the state-wide rollout of improved potato seedlings and heavily subsidized fertilizers.

The creation of this specialized processing infrastructure is designed to transform the subnational economy from a producer of raw tubers into an industrialized potato processing hub. By scaling up local seed production through the tissue culture lab and expanding mechanized farming networks, the initiative helps local smallholders bypass middlemen, reduce high post-harvest losses, and increase domestic food sufficiency indices.

This agro-industrial launch underscores a deliberate policy shift toward agriculture-led manufacturing and economic diversification under the state's development blueprint. By embedding modern technology transfer directly into rural farming cooperatives, the administration strengthens the structural capacity of its primary sector and builds up alternative, non-oil revenue channels.
