The Bayelsa State Government has completed the engineering construction of the 42-kilometre Sagbama–Ekeremor Road project in the Bayelsa West Senatorial District. The cross-regional road asset, which features six major concrete bridges designed to cross dense deltaic waterways, now connects several remote riverine communities directly to Yenagoa, the state capital. Following its successful delivery, the administration under Governor Douye Diri confirmed that the first phase of the expansion spur, the Ekeremor-Ndoro-Agge road, has officially commenced.
The completion of this long-delayed highway addresses severe transportation challenges that have affected the riverine populations of Bayelsa West for decades. By shifting passenger and cargo transit from expensive, high-risk river boats to efficient road networks, the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has reduced local transportation costs. The asphalted highway opens up isolated coastal communities, allowing farmers, fishermen, and market traders to transport perishable goods to major urban markets faster, thereby stimulating the local maritime and retail economy.
The delivery of this complex engineering project highlights the state executive’s capacity for infrastructure development and project continuity in challenging terrains. By resolving long-standing contract issues and successfully funding the road to completion, the administration strengthens public trust in government performance. This infrastructure investment enhances regional connectivity, reduces rural isolation, and establishes a durable framework for public service delivery and long-term economic diversification across Bayelsa State's coastal zones.
