Jigawa State Secures NUC Recognition for Medical University to Expand Healthcare Workforce Development | Daily Policy Tracker

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially recognised the Jigawa State University of Medical and Allied Health Sciences, Majia, following the Jigawa State Government's acquisition of Khadija University. With the approval, the institution becomes the 70th State University in Nigeria, while Khadija University formally ceases operations as a private university and transitions to state ownership.

The recognition followed the Commission's review of the Jigawa State Government's submission, including the enabling law and supporting documentation. The NUC subsequently notified key national institutions, including JAMB, TETFund, NELFUND and the NYSC, to facilitate the regulatory and administrative processes associated with the university's new status.

During the recognition ceremony, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa'id Ahmad, described the university as a strategic investment in medical education and healthcare workforce development. They commended Governor Umar Namadi for expanding educational opportunities that will support the training of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professionals.

Governor Umar Namadi described the recognition as a major milestone in the state's efforts to strengthen both the education and health sectors. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to providing the infrastructure, funding, academic personnel and institutional support required to develop the university into a leading centre for medical education, research and innovation.

The establishment of a specialised medical university strengthens Jigawa State's capacity to develop highly skilled healthcare professionals through locally accessible medical education. Expanding training opportunities for doctors, nurses and allied health practitioners contributes to addressing workforce shortages that continue to affect healthcare delivery across many parts of Nigeria.

Official recognition by the National Universities Commission provides the institution with the legal and regulatory foundation required to operate within the national higher education system. It also enables access to statutory support mechanisms and national education programmes that are essential for institutional growth, academic quality assurance and student development.

The transition from a private university to a state-owned institution reflects a deliberate investment in public higher education. State ownership provides greater opportunities to align academic programmes with public health priorities, workforce planning and long-term human capital development strategies while expanding access to specialised professional education.

The recognition also reinforces Jigawa State's broader investment in social sector development. Strengthening medical education alongside healthcare infrastructure creates a stronger pipeline between education and service delivery, supporting improved healthcare outcomes while positioning the state as an emerging centre for medical and allied health sciences in Northern Nigeria.
