Edo State Showcases Electricity Reform Agenda at African Union Power Sector Summit | Daily Policy Tracker

The Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Power, presented its electricity sector reform programme at the African Union Summit on Power Sector Reforms held in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Governor Monday Okpebholo, represented by the Commissioner for Power, Hon. Paul E. Usenbo, outlined the administration's strategy for developing a sustainable, investor-friendly electricity market capable of supporting industrialisation, economic growth and expanded access to reliable electricity across Edo State.

During the summit, the state's delegation presented Edo's electricity reform agenda to policymakers, international development partners, energy sector stakeholders and prospective investors. The presentation highlighted the administration's commitment to decentralised electricity generation, renewable energy development, private sector participation and the establishment of an enabling regulatory environment designed to stimulate investment in the power sector.

The Governor further stated that the administration intends to position electricity as a strategic driver of economic transformation, employment generation and inclusive development. According to the presentation, the reforms are expected to create opportunities for strategic partnerships that will accelerate energy infrastructure development while improving electricity access for households and businesses throughout the state.

The participation at the African Union Summit also served to present Edo State's ongoing electricity reforms within a broader continental policy dialogue on energy sector transformation and investment.

The engagement reflects an executive-government strategy that extends beyond domestic policy implementation to include investment promotion and participation in regional policy platforms. By presenting its electricity reform agenda before African policymakers, development partners and potential investors, Edo State is seeking to strengthen external confidence in its evolving electricity market while attracting partnerships capable of supporting long-term infrastructure development.

From a governance perspective, the reform agenda demonstrates an emphasis on decentralised electricity governance, regulatory development and increased private sector participation. These priorities are consistent with broader efforts to diversify electricity supply, improve market efficiency and expand reliable power access through subnational institutional reforms.

The presentation also illustrates the growing role of state governments in shaping electricity sector development following ongoing decentralisation within Nigeria's power sector. By promoting renewable energy, investment-friendly regulation and strategic partnerships, the administration is positioning electricity infrastructure as a key component of economic competitiveness, industrial development and public service delivery.
