Akwa Ibom State Orders New Urban Drainage Master Plan and Strict Sanitation Enforcement

Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno has directed the immediate development of a comprehensive flood and drainage master plan to manage the environmental impact of urban expansion. During a physical inspection of the Judiciary Staff Quarters project, the Governor announced the establishment of the Clean Akwa Ibom Brigade, reinstated mandatory monthly sanitation hours (7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on the last Saturday of each month), and authorized the creation of specialized sanitation courts to prosecute environmental offenders.

Unregulated real estate construction and blocked storm drains cause severe seasonal urban flooding, damaging public buildings and threatening resident safety. Formulating a statewide drainage master plan, threatening the immediate demolition of structures built over recognized water channels, and penalizing contractors who abandon or delay public projects ensure that the state's massive capital investments are protected from premature water-induced decay.

This regulatory directive showcases a highly disciplined approach to urban resilience planning, environmental code enforcement, and public works monitoring under the ARISE Agenda. By pairing infrastructural improvements with strict legal enforcement channels and citizen sanitation duties, the administration builds a clean, organized, and structurally secure subnational capital.
