The Lagos State Government, through Health District III, reaffirmed its commitment to improving students' health by conducting the Quarterly School Health Programme at Falomo High School, Ikoyi. Speaking during the outreach, the Permanent Secretary of Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, stated that the initiative is designed to identify health concerns early and help students maintain good health so they can achieve better educational outcomes and develop into productive citizens.
Dr. Adeleke explained that the programme provides free quarterly health services across schools as part of the state's preventive healthcare strategy and clarified that the outreach is not a vaccination exercise. She noted that the programme focuses on health screening, early detection of medical conditions and the promotion of healthy living among students, while teachers also benefit from the initiative. She encouraged students to seek guidance from parents, teachers, counsellors and healthcare professionals whenever they encounter health or personal challenges and advised them to avoid drug abuse. The Permanent Secretary also promoted healthy lifestyle practices, including balanced nutrition, adequate hydration, good oral hygiene, regular physical activity and sufficient sleep, urging students to cooperate fully with healthcare personnel during the screening process.
Responding on behalf of the school, the Principal of Falomo Senior High School, Mr. Paul Omo-Aibangbee, commended the Lagos State Government for providing free healthcare services, noting that some students require medical attention for conditions affecting their eyesight and dental health. He encouraged parents to ensure their children take advantage of such healthcare opportunities. Speaking on behalf of the students, Miss Asmawu Usman, an SSS2 student, expressed appreciation for the medical outreach and appealed for the programme to continue across schools throughout Lagos State.
The Quarterly School Health Programme demonstrates Lagos State's continued investment in preventive healthcare through the education sector. Rather than concentrating solely on the treatment of illnesses, the initiative prioritises early detection of health conditions, health education and routine screening, helping to identify medical issues before they become more serious and potentially affect students' learning and overall wellbeing.
