The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation issued a public traffic advisory notifying motorists of the commencement of expansion joint replacement works at Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. According to the Ministry, the rehabilitation project is being executed by the Federal Ministry of Works and commenced on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, with the construction programme expected to continue for approximately two weeks.
To facilitate the rehabilitation works and provide a safe operating environment for construction personnel, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes across a 1.5-kilometre section of the corridor. The Ministry advised motorists to anticipate partial traffic disruptions around the Kara axis during the construction period and urged road users to exercise patience, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the route.
The advisory further indicated that moderate traffic congestion is expected around the Fatgbems Turn as some motorists divert or make U-turns to avoid delays. However, traffic proceeding beyond the Fatgbems Turn towards Ibadan is expected to experience comparatively minimal disruption. The Ministry encouraged motorists to plan their journeys in advance, utilise alternative routes where practicable and comply with all official traffic advisories throughout the rehabilitation period.
The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation expressed appreciation for public cooperation, stating that the temporary traffic management measures are necessary to support rehabilitation works intended to improve the long-term safety, structural integrity and durability of the Kara Bridge for all categories of road users.
The traffic advisory represents an executive-government operational measure designed to minimise disruption while supporting the safe execution of critical transport infrastructure maintenance. Although the bridge rehabilitation is being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works, the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation is performing an important coordinating role by providing advance public notification, facilitating traffic management and communicating operational guidance to motorists.
