Akwa Ibom State has commenced construction of the Ikot Ekpene International Market, a multi-block commercial development described by the state government as part of its wider trade, tourism and industrialisation agenda.
The project was unveiled through a turning-of-the-sod ceremony in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, with the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Captain Iniobong Ekong (Rtd.), describing the market as a component of the state's economic development plans.
The first phase of the market is described as containing 30 blocks, with each block structured as a double-deck facility. The first phase is planned to contain 108 shops alongside two warehouses, restaurants, cold rooms and a police station.
The project also incorporates asphalt and concrete roads within the market complex. According to the commissioner, the development is intended to serve traders and consumers from Akwa Ibom and neighbouring Cross River and Abia states, as well as connections extending toward Cameroon.
The state government associates the project with expected revenue generation, employment opportunities and expanded commercial linkages. The market is also positioned within the administration's broader objectives for trade, tourism, industrialisation and other sectors.
The Ikot Ekpene International Market remains a construction project at the stage described during the unveiling and turning-of-sod ceremony. Its stated infrastructure and commercial functions are the elements identified by the state source.
