Abia State's education infrastructure programme extends beyond its planned 20 Smart Schools, with new and renovated school facilities reported at more than 78 locations across the state.
The Abia State Government is building 20 state-of-the-art Smart Schools across the state's 17 Local Government Areas, with at least one Smart School planned for each local government area.
The source reports that two of the 20 Smart Schools had already been completed, commissioned and put into use by students, while the remaining 18 were at various stages of completion as of September 30, 2026.
Beyond the Smart Schools programme, new school buildings were reported to be under development in more than 78 locations. The broader intervention also includes renovation and retrofitting of existing school buildings, including facilities that had failed integrity tests.
Examples identified include Omoba Central School in Isiala Ngwa South, Umuikaa Community School in Isiala Ngwa South, Uruji Secondary School in Amuru Abam, Arochukwu, and Etche Road Primary School in Aba South.
The interventions are presented by the state government as part of its broader education-sector programme aimed at improving learning environments and facilities for students and teachers. A more detailed account with before-and-after project documentation was indicated as forthcoming.
