The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency has conducted a two-day capacity-strengthening meeting for peer educators and community representatives as part of efforts to reinforce community-led HIV services.
LSACA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Folakemi Animashaun spoke at the meeting on September 15, 2026, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ikeja. She described peer educators as an important link between communities and available HIV services.
The agency said peer educators have roles in providing accurate HIV information, addressing misconceptions, promoting prevention and testing, supporting referrals and linkage to care, and encouraging treatment adherence and retention.
The two-day engagement focused on strengthening and standardising practical knowledge in HIV prevention, testing services, treatment literacy, referral pathways, adherence support, community mobilisation, confidentiality, documentation and communication.
Animashaun also urged participants to bring field experiences and persistent barriers to the discussion, with particular attention to service access and the experiences of adolescents and young people living with HIV. She stressed professionalism, empathy and confidentiality while reminding peer educators to refer clinical and specialised concerns to qualified providers.
The engagement concluded with LSACA reaffirming the role of community networks and peer educators in programme planning, implementation and continuous improvement of the HIV response across Lagos State.
