The call was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals, Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, at a stakeholder forum involving policymakers and members of the legal community at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ikeja.

Sarumi said the Sustainable Development Goals should be treated not only as global commitments but also as a framework for translating development priorities into laws, policies, programmes and measurable results. She said the goals are already incorporated into aspects of Lagos State's development planning and budgeting architecture.

The Permanent Secretary highlighted the interconnected nature of the goals, arguing that outcomes in areas such as education, employment, poverty, gender equality and institutional strength can affect one another. She urged lawyers to contribute through legislation, regulatory reform, policy development and access to justice.

She also stressed that policymakers need to bridge the gap between government commitments and actual outcomes. According to the source, policies should be evidence-based, inclusive, adequately funded, legally sound and measurable, with continuous assessment after implementation.

The forum therefore focused on strengthening the relationship between law, policy and development planning as the 2030 SDG deadline approaches. The immediate outcome recorded in the source is the stakeholder engagement and call for stronger collaboration rather than a new law or specific programme announcement.
