The Jigawa State Government has formally presented appointment letters to 2,020 newly recruited secondary school teachers as part of its continuing expansion of the state's teaching workforce.
The appointments comprise 1,100 teachers engaged on permanent and pensionable terms and 920 recruited through the J-Teach programme. Governor Umar Namadi presented the appointments in Dutse and said the recruitment was intended to address shortages of qualified teachers.
The governor said particular attention would be given to underserved rural communities, where the deployment of qualified teachers is intended to improve pupil-teacher and student-teacher ratios. The government also linked the intervention to its broader education-sector recruitment programme.
The state government publication said the latest recruitment follows the distribution of school uniforms, bags and writing materials to learners and forms part of a wider education investment programme. The governor also said teacher development would include induction, mentoring, training, retraining and performance assessment.
The governor reported that since 2023, J-Teach and related pathways had brought thousands of personnel into basic and post-basic education, with some subsequently converted to permanent and pensionable appointments following training and selection processes. He also cited additional recruitment for mega schools and boarding senior secondary schools.
The 2,020 appointments therefore represent a further expansion of the teaching workforce announced by the Jigawa Government. The source also reported a separate donation of 450 bicycles by Guaranty Trust Bank for pupils and students travelling long distances to school.
