Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed the development of a permanent solution to the washed-out section of the East-West Road at Agbarho after heavy rainfall caused the highway section to collapse.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed the development of a permanent solution to the washed-out section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area after about six consecutive days of heavy rainfall caused the affected section of the highway to collapse. The governor inspected the damaged section and directed immediate remedial action while a lasting intervention is developed.
The damaged section followed about six consecutive days of heavy rainfall that caused the highway to collapse. During his inspection, Oborevwori was briefed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc on the progress of emergency works. The governor directed the company to undertake the necessary technical studies to determine the most appropriate permanent intervention.
Julius Berger commenced surveys and hydraulic assessments to establish whether a mini-bridge or multi-cell culvert would provide the appropriate solution. The governor said the state government was prepared to fund the remedial works and stressed that the permanent intervention must adequately accommodate the volume of water passing through the area to reduce the risk of another failure.
The immediate response was focused on restoring movement along the affected corridor. Julius Berger initially assured the governor that the other lane would be reopened to traffic after completion of the emergency works. The governor also acknowledged the temporary inconvenience experienced by motorists and other road users as a result of the damaged section.
The emergency intervention subsequently progressed, with Julius Berger completing palliative work on the other lane and reopening it to traffic. Movement therefore resumed along the affected section while the technical assessment and development of a permanent solution continued. The response combines short-term traffic restoration with a longer-term drainage and structural intervention under consideration.
