The Ondo State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has intensified monitoring and enforcement of building and town-planning regulations across major towns and cities in the state.
The ministry's task force visited areas in Akure, Ondo, Ikare Akoko, Owo and Idanre, where officials reported finding construction activities without approved layouts, building plans or land-use clearances, as well as projects that allegedly differed from approved plans.
The reported infractions also included construction on government setbacks, encroachment on public land and buildings described by the ministry as distressed and potentially dangerous to occupants.
Permanent Secretary of the Building Control Section Abimbola Tofowomo said the task force had been directed to move across the state's 18 Local Government Areas to monitor compliance with planning regulations and approvals.
The ministry advised builders to obtain the necessary approvals before commencing construction, warning that violations could result in demolition, penalties or prosecution under applicable state laws.
During the enforcement exercise, contravention notices were reportedly issued at several residential, commercial, educational and other construction sites, while some locations were sealed as the ministry continued its regulatory operations.
