The Ondo State Government has directed unions representing tipper and quarry operators to put implementation of a recently increased truck-loading fee on hold while consultations continue.
The directive from Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa followed an engagement between the state government and executive members of several unions representing tipper and quarry operators. The discussions were convened after reports of an increase in the cost of loading sand and other quarry materials.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Jaiyeola Alabi, conveyed the directive after the meeting. The affected groups included the Union of Tipper and Quarry Employers of Nigeria, the Association of Sand Quarry Operators, Tipper Owners and Suppliers, Laterite Suppliers and Sand and Quarry Suppliers, and the United Quarry Association.
The state government said the matter required further consultation and a mutually acceptable resolution. Alabi also urged union leaders to consider the prevailing cost pressures affecting citizens and businesses while engaging their members on the issue.
The President of UTQEN, Alhaji Taiwo Odetola, acknowledged the concerns raised by government but cited high diesel prices and other operating expenses as factors affecting businesses in the sector. He undertook to communicate the outcome of the engagement to members.
The meeting was adjourned until Friday, September 18, 2026, when union executives are expected to return after consultations. Until then, implementation of the reported fee increase remains on hold pending further discussions.
