Aba South Local Government has disputed a viral claim that ₦6.2 billion was spent on the rehabilitation of Aba Town Hall, stating that the project's approved construction cost was ₦149,224,446.
In a statement responding to a viral video attributed to Chief Charles Ogbonna, former Aba South Local Government mayor Chief Uche Wogu said the claim that ₦6.2 billion was spent on the rehabilitation of Aba Town Hall was incorrect.
Wogu said he was mayor when the rehabilitation was executed and that he initiated the project, developed the construction details and cost estimates with the Head of the Department of Works, Engineer ID Ngwakwe, and his team.
According to the Aba South local government publication, the project was executed through direct labour and the total approved construction cost was ₦149,224,446. The Finance and General Purposes Committee reportedly ratified the expenditure on December 14, 2023.
Wogu said the rehabilitation was supervised by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzo Nwachukwu, and referred to an extract from the committee's minutes as documentation supporting the approved expenditure figure.
The statement therefore places the reported approved cost at ₦149.224 million and disputes the separate ₦6.2 billion allegation. The source does not independently establish the contents of the referenced committee extract beyond the statement's description of it.
