Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has granted clemency to 27 inmates across correctional facilities in the state as part of an Independence Day intervention, with the government reporting that more than 500 people have benefited from clemency interventions under the administration.
The latest intervention covers eligible inmates released under the exercise as well as payments of fines and compensation for other beneficiaries. The state government described the measures as part of a restorative justice approach.
Kaduna State Commissioner for Information and Culture Ahmed Maiyaki said the administration had committed more than ₦300 million to fines and compensation for victims since Governor Uba Sani assumed office in May 2023.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir James A. Kanyip, said the latest clemency exercise followed established processes governing the exercise of the prerogative of mercy, with consideration given to accountability, rehabilitation and the responsibilities accompanying release.
Kanyip also linked the payment of fines and compensation to the restorative dimension of the programme, noting that financial obligations can contribute to some inmates remaining in custody while victims' interests are also considered.
The Kaduna State government publication said the latest exercise continues clemency interventions conducted on significant national occasions and forms part of a broader approach to justice and social reintegration.
