The Greater Jos Master Plan 2025–2050 team, working with the Plateau State Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, has engaged the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on incorporating food security and agricultural preservation into the proposed development framework.

The engagement sought relevant data on agricultural programmes, policies and activities so that the master plan can reflect the needs of farmers alongside the requirements of a growing urban population. The planning consortium is reviewing the existing master plan and has commenced topographical and land-use surveys, with socio-economic surveys expected to follow.

The proposed planning area is centred around Zaramaganda Roundabout and extends across a 30-kilometre radius, covering substantial agricultural land. The planning team said the challenge was to balance urban expansion with preservation of land needed to support food production.

Proposals presented during the engagement included careful zoning, protection of agricultural land, possible vertical farming, conversion of organic urban waste into compost and fertiliser, wastewater recycling for agricultural purposes, and development of farmers' markets, cold-storage facilities and distribution hubs.

The Agriculture Ministry welcomed the engagement and pledged cooperation, including providing relevant information and working with land, survey and town-planning authorities to identify and document agricultural areas requiring protection. The participants also called for continuity and sustainability of the master plan beyond the current administration.
