The procedure was performed on a young man with sickle cell disease who developed avascular necrosis of the head of the femur. The Yobe State government publication described total hip replacement as a previously unavailable orthopaedic surgical procedure in the region.

The operation was led by Dr. Lawan Musa Yari, with Dr. Musa Abdulmalik, Dr. Bashok Palagvi, Mr. Manasseh Jonah and Mr. Karumi Ibrahim also listed as members of the surgical team.

Commissioner for Health Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana described the procedure as a medical milestone for the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital. The report said the operation was successfully completed on Saturday.

The publication also referenced a separate specialised maxillofacial operation performed at Damaturu Specialist Hospital in May 2026 on a 40-year-old woman with mandibular ameloblastoma, involving reconstruction with plates and an iliac crest bone graft.

Medical experts attributed the two specialised procedures to investment in medical manpower and equipment, while urging continued attention to healthcare capacity. The two state-owned facilities were described as the first in the North East to conduct the respective specialised operations.
