Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has conducted an inspection tour of the ongoing construction at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport terminal in Ibadan, confirming that the facility remains on track for completion by the end of 2026.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde inspected the ongoing terminal expansion project at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan. The multi-billion naira project forms a core component of the administration's strategic master plan to upgrade the municipal airport into a fully functional international aviation hub capable of handling regional passenger traffic and cargo operations.
During the site inspection, Governor Makinde reviewed progress on main terminal building construction, departure lounge installations, security screening zones, and baggage handling systems. The Governor noted that civil engineering contractors are accelerating work shifts to meet critical project milestones, ensuring the international terminal is completed and commissioned before the end of the current fiscal year.
The airport upgrade initiative is designed to boost commercial connectivity, attract direct foreign investment, and position Ibadan as a premier logistics hub in South-West Nigeria. Upgrading the terminal infrastructure will allow international passenger carriers to operate direct flights to Ibadan, eliminating transit bottlenecks for business travelers and agribusiness exporters.
Complementing the terminal expansion, the state government is funding dualized airport access roads, advanced runway lighting systems, and expanded aircraft parking aprons. These civil works ensure full compliance with Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards prior to commercial operations.
Governor Makinde expressed confidence that the project will stimulate hospitality, real estate, and regional trade across Oyo State. The administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict oversight over infrastructure contractors to deliver a world-class international airport terminal on schedule.
