The Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued an interim electricity licence to BEDC Electricity Edo Limited as the state advances its electricity regulatory framework.
The Edo State Government said the licence provides the regulatory framework for BEDC Electricity Edo Limited to undertake electricity distribution activities within the scope and geographical area specified in the licence.
Commissioner for Power Paul Usenbo described the development as a transition from electricity policy and legislation toward implementation of the state's electricity market framework.
The Edo State government publication said operators participating in the state's electricity market are subject to applicable technical, safety, service and consumer-protection standards.
ESERC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Shittu Shaibu said the Electricity Act 2023 provides the federal framework, while the Edo State Electricity Law 2025 gives effect to state-level regulation and the NERC Transition Order provides for transfer of intrastate regulatory oversight.
The licence is interim, with its scope, duration and conditions governed by its provisions, and BEDC Electricity Edo Limited is expected to remain accountable to ESERC for compliance and service standards.
