CR-SEMA, NEMA and the Nigerian Red Cross Society have inspected drainage channels around the University of Cross River State following recurring flooding.
The joint assessment followed a request from UniCROSS management concerning deteriorating drainage conditions and repeated flooding affecting parts of the institution and surrounding communities.
The delegation was led by CR-SEMA Director-General Efa Nyong and included NEMA and Nigerian Red Cross representatives. University officials guided the team through affected areas.
Inspectors observed silted and blocked drainage sections, damaged structures and collapsed concrete portions. Some drainage sections were also considered inadequate for the volume of water passing through them.
The team also visited nearby residential areas where some houses affected by recurring flooding had reportedly been abandoned. Nyong said the assessment provided a clearer understanding of the problem and that CR-SEMA would work with NEMA on possible interventions.
Immediate measures under consideration include the use of a swamp buggy to assist with desilting. NEMA said its findings would be taken back for further consideration, leaving rehabilitation and possible expansion as matters still under assessment.
