Cross River State used the 46th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors in Calabar to outline reported measures involving healthcare staffing, infrastructure, equipment, medicines and doctors' welfare.
Representing Governor Bassey Edet Otu, Deputy Governor Peter Agbe Odey said the administration had prioritised investment in the healthcare workforce, infrastructure, equipment, medicines, health insurance and management.
Odey also said approval had been given for the employment of doctors, including consultant specialists, while describing workforce development and workplace security as components of the state's health-sector interventions.
NARD officials at the conference highlighted the role of resident doctors in clinical services, specialised training and research and stressed the importance of welfare measures for retaining healthcare professionals.
The outgoing NARD National President cited reported measures including 100 per cent remuneration, an increase in retirement age to 65, lifting of employment embargoes and improved security in the state.
The conference brought together resident doctors, medical practitioners, government officials, academics and other stakeholders, with recommendations from the deliberations expected to inform healthcare discussions with federal and state authorities.
