The exercise was flagged off in Calabar by Governor Bassey Edet Otu, represented by the Chief Executive Officer of the State Planning Commission, Pastor Dr Bong Duke.

Stakeholders involved include the National Bureau of Statistics, National Population Commission, Cross River State Persons with Disabilities Commission, CR-GIA, civil society organisations and relevant government ministries and agencies.

Duke said reliable information was necessary for government to understand barriers faced by persons with disabilities in areas including healthcare, education, employment and social services.

State Statistician General Akedoh Okoi Edet said the exercise is intended to provide evidence for identifying gaps, designing interventions and allocating resources. Enumerators were urged to approach households respectfully and communities were asked to cooperate.

The programme included training on Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing and a presentation on global and national disability statistics. The immediate objective is therefore data generation to support future planning rather than the announcement of a new disability programme.
